Sacai was founded by Chitose Abe in 1999 in Tokyo, Japan. Sacai incorporates the idea of hybridization through the juxtaposition of contrasting fabric textures, such as knits with super fine weaves, and the use of techniques based on the reinterpretation of garment patterns, transforming the pieces into unexpected shapes and silhouettes. Although her collections may seem to be about femininity, Abe's interest is in creating entirely unique and timeless garments that are innovative and experimental. For Abe, who is influenced by observing her surroundings and the functions of everyday life, the Sacai collection has a distinctive elegance that relies on renderings and transformations of basic and classic items. The result is a collection of items that can easily transition from one occasion to the next and are not just reserved for special occasions.
The Sacai men's collection, launched in Spring 2009, is based on the same philosophy and approach as Sacai's women's collection. Carefully crafted basics for men, infused with a touch of elegance. Sacai's women's collection began to be presented in Paris during Fashion Week in October 2009 and currently both the women's and men's collections are presented in Paris.
